I am curious about their history before the Beach Boys.

1. How did BC and RF meet each other?
2. Were they Beach Boys fans before? (there music is obviously heavily influenced by the Beatles)
3. Was the Chaplin/Fataar song writing such that one was more of the lyrist? (I believe I asked this question long ago on this thread, but I am not good at finding old threads)

1. www.the-flames.com should answer that for the most part. But - in short: Blondie was probably asked to join The Flames (which consisted of Steve, Brother, and Ricky Fataar), after their previous guitarist(s) Edries Fredericks and (his replacement) Baby Duval had left the band.
2. No clue, but I think not.
3. Don't know.

Regarding question 2...Blondie told me that he was definitely aware of the Beach Boys while growing up in Durbin, South Africa because they were occasionally played on the radio there. I think he mentioned Little Deuce Coupe and I Get Around as the ones he'd heard, but for the most part he was a fan of the STAX and Motown records that were getting airplay, and of course the Beatles and Stones.

I will dig through that web site when I have some more time. Looks interesting though, thanks.

Wasn't "Cottonfields" no.1 on the south african charts? I guess he probably heard that too.

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

that was late 69 or 1970. But they had several more hits in the mid 60ies (Calif. Girls and Barbara Ann being #1 hits as well), so I guess he heard them then too.

Maybe, but not in South Africa...he moved to the UK in '68.

O, and for those interested in the music of the Flames. Although vinyl copies of their last 2 South African albums (Soul Fire and Burning Soul) show up on Ebay from time to time, except for an average sounding Best Of CD (from 1994, long OOP) their music wasn't available on CD. Until now.

In 2010 the 2fer Soulfire + Burning Soul was released, and just a couple of months back their impossible to find first 2 albums and all their non album singles as well !!

They can be ordered internationally on http://www.freshmusic.co.za/retrofresh.htm

or directly at GEMM:

UMMM! UMMM! OH YEAH + THAT'S ENOUGH + non album tracks (2CD set)
http://gemm.com/q.cgi?rb=sugarmusic&seller=GMV80032&a_refno=GML1455872681

and
BURNING SOUL! + SOULFIRE!!
http://gemm.com/q.cgi?rb=sugarmusic&seller=GMV80032&a_refno=GML1446861273

Especially the latter I can recommend!

O, and of course the grey market CD-release of Carl Wilson produced The Flame album from 1970 still available.
The only track that can only found on 45, and not on CD is the track Streamliner that was released in the UK on a 2-artist single released in (I think) 1970
