While being inspired by one article to another to my other thread, I'd like to throw out another interactive thread. Perhaps the idea for this is to give out your top 15 songs that are/were unreleased (either "rarities" or former bonus tracks on twofers or compilation extras, basically, songs that weren't released on original albums: Surfin' Safari through Stars and Stripes Vol. 1) that you think would improve albums material or flow or what have ya.

I'll post the song and the album it could have went well with (if applicable):

1) Won't You Tell Me (20/20 or Sunflower)
2) Soulful Old Man Sunshine (Sunflower)
3) Carry me Home (Holland)
4) I Do (Shut Down Vol. 2)
5) Sail Plane Song (20/20 or Sunflower)
6) Number One (if recorded by BB for Surfin' Safari)
7) Back Home (Surfer Girl)
8 Can't Wait Too Long (Wild Honey or 20/20 or Keepin' the Summer Alive)
9) First Love (ML solo for L.A. or Keepin' the Summer Alive)
10) Pipeline (BJ solo, let's face it, the Beach Boys in the 70s needed some instrumentals, throw is on Love You and add some synth and call it Brian's, I'm fine with it)
11) Sweet Mountain (had the BB recorded a version of it, what a lost opportunity. Put it on Love You or the lost Caribou album from 74)
12) It's Trying to Say (Love You or MIU)
13) A Time to Live in Dreams (Friends or 20/20)
14) Big Sur (original version for Surf's Up or Holland)
15) San Miguel (Sunflower)

Of course, I had to do more than just 15, so here's another 15 tunes:

1) Deep Purple (15 Big Ones, one of Brian's best covers)
2) Go and Get That Girl (would have sounded great with Chicago backing in concert, throw this one on L.A.)
3) I'm Going Your Way (Surf's Up, totally!)
4) It's a New Day(So Tough)
5) Mona Kani (Sunflower needs a great instrumental, and this one fits)
6) Rollin' Up To Heaven (Love You, would have been a great ending tracks)
7) Thank Him (Surfer Girl or Shut Down Vol. 2)
8 Stevie (BB 85)
9) Almost Summer (L.A.)
10) That Special Feeling (MIU)
11) Out in the Country (Holland)
12) Chasin' the Sky (Still Cruisin' or BB 85)
13) We're Together Again (Friends)
14) It's a Beautiful Day (L.A.)
15) Sound of Free (Sunflower or Surf's Up)

If you'll notice, I chose no Smile tracks or DW tracks from POB or Bambu; I feel all those tracks shall all stay together as albums and not pieces to fill in other albums.

In my opinion I think Brian was kind of on a roll with quality material 1976-1977 that has never been released like "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and "Lazy Lizzie" which should at least deserve some kind of official release. And then there are gems from Adult Child and New Album that have only surfaced on bootleg. Perhaps a release of the best of these would be something to look forward to.

good call.

Reminds me that, oddly enough, the single mix of Cottonfields begins on Sunflower on the UK album version

I agree. Some see that type of material a little lacking but if the releases were actually remastered, we'd hear a lot more on those mixes than I think the boot releases have given us over the years which would amaze me and others in the surrounding areas....much like what the POB/Bambu releases did for our ears.

I'd love to hear/through around ideas about how to release them, in what type of packaging/tracklisting/etc.

To be honest, I always thought Celebrate the News sounded like more of an album track, but is very fitting as a b-side.

My thoughts on adding My Solution to Surf's Up are that of optimism; it gives the album a little more humor and helps Take a Load off your feet not stick out like a soar thumb or toe for that matter. But as a political stance, I think the album could have been seen as somewhat of a political status, even with Student Demonstration Time on there (only good thing about it) gives more of a view of on current issues and politics. For the most part, I think SU is the most political album of the Beach Boys. Had 4th of July been on there, it would have only helped that aspect out more. Even something like Carry Me Home (though I know it wasn't written until Holland era), throws an aspect of Vietnam.

15, eh? let's see what I can do....in no particular order:

1) Remove "Tears In The Morning" from Sunflower and move "Deirdre" over to its place. Then, add "I'm Going Your Way" / "California Slide" / "Hey, That Was Perf-" or whatever it's called so that way the trilogy including "Slip On Through" and "Got To Know The Woman" would be complete.

2) Toss out "Bull Session With The Big Daddy," bump all of side 2 back a little, and toss in "Guess I'm Dumb" with Brian or Carl on vocal.

3) Get rid of "Don't Go Near The Water" with that awful, "If"-by-Bread guitar work, and replace it with "Soulful Old Man Sunshine." Out of place? Sure, a little.

4) Remove "How She Boogalooed It" from Wild Honey and replace it with "Can't Wait Too Long.

5) Add "It's A New Day" to Carl and the Passions - "So Tough". Don't need to remove anything; there are only eight songs as it is!

6) Burn every known copy, demo, lyric sheet, session, master, and remaining thought of "Hey Little Tomboy." I know I'm reaching into the future for this, but replace it with "I Feel So Fine" DIRECT from the "cocaine" tape, including Brian's post-song astonishment. This would greatly improve MIU.

7) Kill "When Girls Get Together" on Keepin' The Summer Alive and replace it with "Lookin' Down The Coast" / "Down Along The Coastline" / "Song Of The Whale" / whatever so it flows smoother into "Santa Ana Winds."

Eight) That means that there's no longer a Sunflower-era outtake on the album. I suggest to kill off "Some Of Your Love" and to add "Walkin'," complete with Brian walking away and saying, "F***, I can't sing this bitch!"

9) All Summer Long -- lose "I Get Around" (you read that right!!! See elsewhere on this board for my thoughts on "I Get Around") and put in the alternate version of "Don't Back Down." This way you have an album bookended by two versions of that song. The first version has the chickens**t lyrics, but the album ends with a happier note telling you to "don't back down from that wave."

10) I've never heard the song except for a couple of lines Dan Addington once sang when retelling of his meeting with someone (might have been Alan Boyd, but I might be wrong) at the Chez Jay's event, but...put "Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again" back in its rightful place on Surf's Up, immediately after "'Til I Die." Keep the title track at the end.

11) Might as well balance out Surf's Up by adding a song to side 1: "4th Of July", I'd say right after "Long Promised Road."

12) As much as I love the song, "Good Time" sounds way out of place on The Beach Boys Love You. Take it out, and throw in "Everybody Wants To Live", which would fit perfectly with the rest of the songs. Overdubbing of farting synthesizers is optional.

13) Put "We Got Love" back on Holland, take nothing off....just to make the album more robust!

14) Add a version of "God Only Knows" to The Beach Boys In Concert. What's a Beach Boys concert without hearing Carl sing that song?

15 and beyond) Turn Recorded "Live" at a...Beach Boys' Party! into a double-album -- there's plenty of left-over material! "Ruby Baby," "Ticket To Ride," "California Girls," "(I Can Get No) Satisfaction," "Smokey Joe's Café," "Laugh At Me," "She Belongs To Me," the "straight" version of "Little Deuce Coupe," put "Long Tall Sally" and "Heart And Soul" together as a medley, maybe tack on the "Peanut Butter" verse to "Hully Gully," "Blowin' In The Wind," and allegedly "Sloop John B."

You've got some good ideas for Sunflower and KTSA. Where would you put We Got Love on Holland?

people who hate on "take a load off your feet" or "how she boogalooed it" are not my friends.

 Angry

also, is it me, or does "i'm going your way" sound like it's going to be a brilliant song but tanks a good five seconds in? and getting even more aimless about halfway through? and then seeming like it's five minutes long when it's actually like two minutes long? imo.

It goes on for too long, perhaps. Nevertheless it's got a rockin' energy that most of their stuff at the time lacked. My guess is that it was unfinished and the LOOOOONG 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' fade would have had something cool going on over it.

And isn't it sad that something that sounds so unfinished like that took practically the ENTIRE FREAKIN' BAND to write??? You'd think among five people it'd have more substance.

Then you have "Our Team"...

I'd like to hear what everyone would have done with all the leftovers from Sunflower/Add Some Music on subsequent albums.
