I always thought that there was something weird about this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQdDjy1UtW4
Can't remember ever hearing Telstar with that intro, not that I listened to it a lot
Me either. I was thinking that it might be a fan edit, but I've found several different YouTube posts with that intro.
My understanding is that opening is the sound of a toilet flushing!
No kidding. Can you tll if it's north or south of the equator?

Uh, how do I say this nicely....?
Nope -- can't!
Anyway -- it's a toilet flushing recorded in reverse. By the great Joe Meek. For those of us not super cool and superior enough to know that already.

I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

The scary part about the Budd Dwyer footage is that it aired, unedited, on Channel 6 (ABC) in Philadelphia during the five and six o'clock news...
I don't think he ever accepted any kind of bribe...the American "justice system" ate him up and spit him out.
Can't believe I missed this reference...I think there is some misinformation about the R. Budd Dwyer clip which I hope my memory allows me to recall!
I lived outside of Philly so WPVI Channel 6 "Action News" was the go-to station for news. If I remember, this press conference happened during the winter, and school had been closed due to weather that day, so we were all home. The TV happened to be on as they showed the press conference, where Dwyer pulled out the envelope and started waving the gun. The first time I recall seeing it broadcast - whether it was live or not, I don't know - they cut to a blank screen immediately after the gun went off, but the shot was shown for that split-second and I saw it once until YouTube picked it up decades later. This was broadcast during the day.
Any airings of the clip later than that on the evening news showed it right up to the point where he raises the gun, and they cut it off before you hear the shot. It was everything we were talking about in school after that, still quite a shock and a sad story obviously. But I think to clarify, if one station had carried it live as the story was developing at Dwyer's press conference, the gunshot itself wasn't shown on the newscasts after that.
At least to my memory, as someone who saw Channel 6's coverage that day we just happened to be home from school, that's how the local broadcasts covered it. I don't know what the Harrisburg area stations did with the story. Corrections welcome of course!

There were multiple cameras shooting the press conference. The footage I saw on the news the day of the event was shot from the front and showed him putting the gun in his mouth, then abruptly cut to the same shot of the podium after he fell. About 14 years ago I saw the unedited footage shot by the cameraman who was to Dwyer's right. After the trigger was pulled, Dwyer's body fell to the right of the podium and was somewhat supported by it. The camerman tilted the camera down and, instinctively, zoomed in to refocus then pulled back to re-frame the shot. By this point, there was a copious amount of blood pouring from Mr. Dwyer's nose and mouth.
I believe this is the footage that the band Filter saw that inspired their song "Hey Man, Nice Shot". The title seems to be a comment on the cameraman's covering the action as professionally as possible in the face of a horrible unexpected tragedy.

The longer unedited footage made the rounds after the incident and took on a life of its own, definitely. I remember seeing it offered for sale and on trading lists (how bizarre) before the internet made it available. It was a press conference so obviously there were at least 3 Harrisburg stations there, at least 3 Philly stations there, and various others. So whichever station had the most loose control over their tape archives might have been how the unedited version leaked.
I know I've heard the claim that Channel 6 showed the shooting on their newscasts before, and it was a bit of an urban legend, but I can vouch for the fact it was only shown once, and for a split-second, and everything after that was edited, and the newscasts also started giving a "graphic content" warning before showing even what little they showed.

My parents both remembered the Budd Dwyer incident, and they recalled when I asked them about it that WPVI-TV Channel 6 did show the "unedited footage". The Wikipedia entry notes that the Channel 6 broadcast was the source of the version going around on the internet, and that several other stations played the footage up to Mr. Dwyer putting the gun in his mouth and then cut off the tape or froze the frame and kept the audio running uncensored.

Just in case anyone here doesn't know who we're talking about or why his suicide would be shown on television.

Yeah, this appears to be the alleged WPVI-TV Channel 6 source.
Something that seems to be overlooked about Mr. Dwyer was that he committed suicide so that his family would be able to keep his pension. Not that suicide ever makes sense but it makes financial sense. Thing is, he read only half of his prepared speech that morning right before he shot himself. The unread portion was recovered; it's on the Wikipedia article linked a few posts up. He said quite clearly in the unread portion that he planned his death.

My dad used to tell me about him. He remembered seeing this on the news totally uncensored at the time. I guess this was just right before my time. I've never actually seen any other footage of R Budd Dwyer other than this. I've seen a slightly longer clip where he reads from his prepared speech. I still think it's odd how calmly he pulls out the gun and shoots himself. The part that gets me is the reaction to it. I mean, the top of his head is gone, and people are saying "um...remain calm everybody...".

Does anybody here remember Christine Chubbuck? She was a news broadcaster from the 1970's I believe. She apparently shot herself right in the middle of a live news report.

As horrifying as it was to watch, the events behind it are even worse. Here was a man ruined by allegations that were unproven; was trying desperately to clear his name, and it seemed to him that no matter what he was screwed. Imagine knowing you're innocent of something and there is absolutely no way to prove it. The man killed himself so his wife could get survivor's benefits, since defense costs had bankrupted them. THAT right there is truly horrifying, as I know all too well what it is like to be trapped in a situation with no way out.

That was nasty. The freaky thing was how calm he was beforehand.
There was a documentary in the 1990's in the UK called Executions. There's one bit I'll never forget. You see a guy tied and then shot by firing squad. A bullet hits him full on in the face from a couple of meters. It's not pretty. You can find it on youtube. Be warned it makes Budd Dywer's death look like a PG-13 movie by comparison, IT'S THAT GRIM!!!

To continue on the subject of grim, morbid death, here's a clip of British comedian Tommy Cooper having a fatal heart attack on stage. This was actually on live tv. Nobody realised that it was not part of the act. Everybody just kept laughing, as he was literally dying on stage.

Back to the subject of odd or "disturbing" songs, I've always thought that there was something very weird and even creepy about Busy Doin' Nothin'. On the surface it's just a fairly light weight pop song, but if you really pay attention, there is something very weird and almost forboding about it. I don't know if it's the chords, or maybe the way brian sings it, but something about it doesn't sit right with me.
