Of the music Mike Love has said, “I like the avant-garde approach and stretching the limits the way Brian (Wilson) did. It went beyond conventional music at the time, and I kind of thought that was pretty cool. “
Oh, I'm waiting for the next exodus that results from the argument over this quote.

This news release reads like complete fan fiction - I don't believe it yet.
What is going to be in this limited edition box? Two vinyl albums? The singles I can understand, but why package vinyl albums with four CDs? This is weird.

Clear prior example of this is Bob Dylan's Tell Tale Signs set. It came in three versions.
1.) A single-CD version.
2.) A double-CD version with booklet (this was the "standard" edition).
3.) A three-CD "deluxe" edition with LP-sized packaging and bonus books. It was also more than $100 more than option two.
I would bet that deluxe Smile edition costs somewhere between $200 and $300.
The other example is Bruce Springsteen's "The Promise" -- the "Darkness on the Edge of Town" sessions. There was a standard two-CD version and then a three CD, three DVD edition, also with a book.

SO: I'm in for one, maybe two copies of the deluxe edition.
What is everyone else going to do when they have to buy vinyl with their beloved CDs?
Surely NOT play the Vinyl....

He MAY like it more now, he knows that he has to SAY he likes it now, he certainly didn't like it then, and trying to gloss that contradiction over by casually using "pretty cool" rather than more respectful, formal praise is nauseating
(He should have classily admitted that he had problems with it at the time, or at least been neutral regarding his past opinions of it, rather than patronizingly expecting us to not know fact from fiction. More casual fans may swallow it.
Whatever goodwill he has built up recently with good behavior is greatly compromised by this bullmerda quote.

Whether or not there's actually more session material in the deluxe set's 4 CDs than the regular's 2 will be the determining factor for me because of current budgetary restrictions. If that's the case then mountains will have to be moved!

I happily bought the Springsteen mega set (only $80 for the Blu-ray version - definitely worth it), but couldn't stomach the Dylan set - way too expensive for what you got. Obviously I'll buy the SMiLE mega set, but it seems like the vinyl should have been issued separately.
Regarding additional material on the 4-CD set: how could there not be more session material with this edition?

I almost think the vinyl is simply in there to 1.) make the package physically larger and 2.) to jack up the price.
But hey -- it would have been a record in the 1960s. Maybe that's the way to think about it.
I think there absolutely will be extra session material in the 4-CD version. How could there not be?
I think of it this way --
Disc 1.) Mono mix of a BWPS-ish sequence.
Disc 2.) Alternate mixes and extra fragments, along with demos and other songs that don't "fit" the main sequence. Maybe a few stereo remixes.
Discs 3-4.) Track by track studio sessions. Maybe some vocals-only mixes.
I would almost put money on this general division.

What's intriguing here is that "Cabinessence" will now have to appear in mono for the first time!

Than I suppose that this will be it:
The double CD:
Disc 1: A 'finished' Smile
Disc 2: Best of the sessions
Box set:
CD's: Obviously the 'finished' album, plus I guess three sessions/stack-o-vocals/alternate versions discs like in the Pet Sounds Sessions box
LP's: The double CD on vinyl
Singles: Either 45 rpm versions of the new GV and H&V (78 rpm) singles, or reproductions of the original singles

Thinking something is cool and liking it can be two different things?
I mean, I think Mac OS X is cool, but I don't like it.

O.K. I'm quoting myself, but I'm excited...
What happens with "Surf's Up"? Will it simply be the Brian solo version or will it be a newly-mixed version combining material recorded in '71, again in mono for the first time?

Hey, I'm in for one too. I was just stating the obvious. I need to dispose my disposable income on something. I just bought a brand new cartridge and stylus for my turntable. It will get at least one play before being put away.

, not
The Smile (and a little bit of Surf's Up) Sessions
.

I would bet that deluxe Smile edition costs somewhere between $200 and $300.
I'll take that bet. Say, $50 ?

I'm sure it will be worth it though....Vinyls, a hardcover book, CDs....I really can't wait
