For $146, getting 5 CDs, two LPs, and two 45s PLUS a lavish package and booklet, that's a steal. For $110 like it was yesterday, it's like looting Fort Knox!

I think the single most exciting thing is that it ended up being five CDs instead of four. That alone is amazing. That was my little dream and it happened. I thought four CDs was a tad too little given everything that exists, but five seems about right.

By the way, what is Brian Falls Into A Piano/Microphone?

..considering all that has been accomplished--yes accomplished--by SMiLE fans in keeping the Summer alive concerning this great body of work, I would say the price is not an issue--we're in great shape... Head Spin

Demand must have driven the price up!

Exactly..

It's good business but still pretty unethical..

Funny thing is if an average fan saw the 146 price tag next to the box set you wouldn't think twice, it's a great price for the set.

Little do they know some of us got it for 40 bucks cheaper  Grin

Don't see how it's any more unethical than the changing price of Milk Bread and Gas.

Well were not talking about raising the price a few cents or dollars..

One minute it's 110, then 140, then 146..

It's a pretty significant price change for no apparent reason apart from them suddenly realising this is going to be a big seller  LOL

I'm not really complaining as I said it's still a very amazing price, much less than we all expected

It just seemed a little weird that on one side you are saying even at $146 it is a steal and on the other side you are calling them unethical.  Undecided

The "Brian falls into a piano" bit is from an hour long tape known as "Psychedelic Sounds". It's Brian, Van Dyke, Michael Vosse, and I think Danny Hutton doing some "comedy" (loosely applied) skits and some chants. Part of it ended up on the Vegetables "promo" on Hawthorne, CA. The tape as a whole is extremely tedious. If Hal Blaine were present it would easily be the best of the spoken word tapes from the period.

I think the single most exciting thing is that it ended up being five CDs instead of four. That alone is amazing. That was my little dream and it happened. I thought four CDs was a tad too little given everything that exists, but five seems about right.

Yes, that fifth CD was a great surprise -- and probably a very recent addition. As of a few weeks ago, the box was listed somewhere as consisting of "8 units" -- meaning 4 CDs, 2 LPs and 2 singles. Another nice surprise was that they stuffed Disc One with bonus tracks -- I was kind of expecting the "finished album" disc to contain ONLY the album. Not to toot my own horn -- OK, entirely to toot my own horn!  Razz -- I speculated on (and hoped for) a Disc Five here back in June:

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,10381.msg191719.html#msg191719

Here's the relevant passage:

Quote
I think it's worth noting here that it was the original Billboard announcement that described the release configurations, and NOT the official press release from a few days later. The press release only promises "multiple physical and digital configurations" and "2CD and digital album packages and a deluxe, limited edition box set." I think they left themselves some wiggle room to tweak the configurations, and we'll get the exact specifics when they issue a new press release with the release date and the track list. It's also intriguing (though proof of nothing) that the press release never says FOUR CDs -- that was also in the Billboard article. However, in the accompanying interview Mark Linett said it would take "at least" three CDs to cover the sessions. So...

Disc Five (!?): If Alan and Mark were to slip a Disc Five into The Smile Sessions box, I think they follow the "bonus" disc five in the Good Vibrations box, and use it as a dumping ground for demos, scratchy acetates, and maybe even highlights from the post-1967 SMiLE-related sessions ("Cabinessence," "Our Prayer," "Cool, Cool Water," "Surf's Up," etc.). Perhaps this would be the logical place for any present-day experiments that might be deemed too "far out" or heretical for the "box proper" -- like a mega-"H&V" with all sorts of apocryphal stuff thrown in, or "Wonderful" with "He Gives Speeches" inserted.

Before Andrew chimes in, I'll say that I'm taking credit for calling a Disc Five -- but I'm probably wrong about the CONTENTS of Disc Five...  Wink

What is the 25. Smile Backing Vocals Montage (Bonus Track)?  I am a little confused with this one.

It's a montage of backing vocals from the Smile sessions.

Tick VG. Help yourself to a Perrier Award, AGD, and take the rest of the day off.

Wondeful (no pun) !
Am I right that everything on the 2-disc and the vinyl-version can be found in the box? So the box is the thing that I should get when I want to have the whole stuff?

I think that the move of "I'm In Great Shape" to precede "Barnyard" (as the only change from the BWPS sequencing) portends something interesting going on there - perhaps it will, indeed, be "Barnshine" as mentioned previously. Either way it seems like this slight bit of rejiggering restores the "Barnyard Suite" idea while creating an orphan out of "I Wanna Be Around/Workshop".

As Sean mentioned, "Surf's Up" is probably the backing track married to the Brian piano demo. And I have to think that the previously unreleased solo "Surf's Up" from '67 has to be that thing that Dom Priore was going on about in his book. The thing is: how finished is this newly found "solo" version? If it is anything substantial, wouldn't it replace the hybrid that Mark said he did in the "unfinished album" track listing? It's not like there would be any other Beach Boys heard on that track...or will we hear some manipulated "Child is the Father" vocals edited onto the end?

So far it looks like previously unknown '67 "Surf's Up" and "Heroes & Villains Part 2" are the big surprises.

I've got a question...

The LP Versions seem to have exclusive content, does the 2 CD Set have anything not on the box?

I say this because I'm going to pre-order the 2CD and get the box around Christmas, The box isn't special edition is it? (I would imagine not, since it's selling like the holy grail)

It remains to be seen (for most of us, anyway) what surprises are on there.

If we go to very beginning of this thread, you had people saying things like 'They can't remake BWPS with BB tapes, as there are too many missing lead vocals.  It'll be like a freakin' half-instrumental album.'

Well, they essentially ARE remaking BWPS on Disc 1, so it does raise the question, 'Did they recover a lead vocal or two on tracks like DYLW, Barnyard or CIFOTM?'

One can honestly make the case they were meant to be instrumental!

Especially "Holidays", that never felt suited for vocals to me...
